Bemidji will request permission from the state Legislature to add a special use tax to help generate funds for several projects.
The city hasn't sent the request to the state Legislature yet but is planning to do so, the Bemidji Pioneer reportewd. The city wants to use the money to pay for several infrastructure projects, as well as updates to the Sanford Center and a treatment plant to address perfluorocarbons, which are near water wells.
City Finance Director Ron Eischens told the news agency that the amount to be taxed still hadn't been determined, whether it's 1 percent or more.
When the City Council reconvenes in December, the city expects to submit its request to the legislature, since the deadline to do so is Jan. 31.
