The Kittson County Board of Commissioners declared a state of emergency due to spring flooding in mid-April.

According to the Kittson County Enterprise, emergency manager for Kittson County, Scot Olson, said that Red River had increased in water level a significant amount since last year.

Last year, it had been recorded at a level of 42.46 feet but it was recorded in April at 43.2 feet, a nearly one-foot increase.

The river crested on April 17 at 43.02 feet and the water level was expected to remain high for nearly a week, according to Olson.

As the water level has risen, the response teams are also working to ensure that drivers are aware of flood zones.

“Right now, there are 57 miles of roads in the county underwater,” Olson said. “Shawn (Anderson) and his crew have been doing a fantastic job of keeping everything closed.”

The most important actions will be addressing water overtopping gravel roads, blowouts of culverts and debris that is brought about from the flooding.

To keep on top of the damage or potential for damage, Olson has asked township officials to take photos of floodwater while the flooding occurs and as the water levels recede to keep track of damage.

Three additional counties have approved disaster declarations and have helped to secure 75/25 reimbursement.

Additionally, the county highway department filled 600 sandbags, sending 200 of them to the border to help stave off the rising water levels.

Olson is remaining optimistic that the flood situation is currently under control.

“That’s the good news. The bad news is it’s not going to be a federal flood,” Olson said.

The commission’s other news includes the resignation of Amanda Rynning from the Kittson County Extension office. They have agreed to seek out a replacement for her position as she moves to the Kittson County Farm Service Agency office.
