Heading into the winter months, Gov. Tim Walz made the decision to reinstate COVID-19 restrictions for bars, restaurants, fitness centers and youth sports.
Minnesota has confirmed over 270,000 cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, and infection rates have begun to rise again – an upward trend which has been occurring across the nation. MN GOP Chairwoman Jennifer Carahan released a statement condemning the decision.
“[Shutting] down our economy again is disconcerting, especially as we enter the holiday season,” Carahan said. “This has already been a difficult year for Minnesota’s small businesses and Gov. Walz is not even giving them a fighting chance.”
Many small businesses have been significantly affected by the closures and restrictions of the pandemic, forcing politicians to navigate a balance between economic and public health.
In regards to youth sports, Carahan expressed strong sentiments.
“Shutting down youth sports is probably the worst decision Walz has made throughout the pandemic,” Carahan said. “This decision will set off a cascade of unintended consequences for an entire generation of Minnesotans.”
