The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has announced that winter truck load increases began on Dec. 21, with unlimited state highways in the north frost region.
Residents can find a MnDOT load limits map on the MnDOT website.
Vehicles can operate up to 10% over the official legal maximum loads on unlimited highways during the winter load increase duration. However, trucks still have to obey registered weight laws and not exceed registered gross weight thresholds. Drivers need to check with local law enforcement before extending any weights on city, county and township highways.
A permit to increase winter weight is required to take advantage of the 10% weight increase on interstate highways only. Meanwhile, a permit is not needed for state trunk highways.
For residents who have questions about over legal weight/size “heavy haul” trucking, contact MnDOT by calling 651-296-6000 or emailing ofcvopermits.dot@state.mn.us.
Residents who have enforcement questions can call the Minnesota Department of Public Safety - State Patrol - Commercial Vehicle Enforcement at 651-350-2000.
