2nd Annual e-Race Stigma Community Walk/Run Aims to Provide Hope and Healing
CROOKSTON, Minn. August 29, 2022 – We invite the Crookston and surrounding communities to join us for the 2nd Annual e-Race Stigma Community 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, September 17, 2022. The free event will kick off at Crookston High School at 10 a.m. New this year, we're adding a 5K run option. Participants will receive a swag bag, and there will be food trucks on site.
"We'll have a mental health expo inside the school so people can grab resources and talk to local agencies about services in the Crookston area,” said Shannon Abrahamson, event coordinator, NW8 AMHI Coordinator, and Suicide Prevention Lead for the H.O.P.E. Coalition. “We plan to have food trucks onsite, so even if you cannot participate in the walk or run, you can still come out to connect, have lunch with us, and help us erase the stigma around suicide."
Several groups have partnered to organize this event, including Polk County Social Services, Polk County Public Health, Crookston Public Schools, the H.O.P.E. Coalition, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, and Alluma. Many other local agencies plan to attend and provide resources on the day of the event.
“We know human connection and relationships are critical to healthy communities and preventing suicide. We want everyone to know how to get help when life feels too heavy,” says Sarah Reese, Polk County Public Health Director. “We want family members and friends supporting someone struggling with thoughts of suicide to have resources and tools to keep their loved ones safe. By coming out to this event, we’re letting our friends and neighbors know they are not alone.”
