March 7 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Join Minnesota author Cindy Wilson for a discussion of her book The Beautiful Snow: The Ingalls Family, the Railroads, and the Hard Winter of 1880-81. Attendees will learn some historical context behind Laura Ingalls Wilder’s novel The Long Winter, using information found in the newspaper record of the time, including those from Lyon, Lincoln, and Murray counties. This period of time, known historically as The Hard Winter of 1880-81, was a fascinating “perfect storm” when a particularly bad winter coincided with brand new towns whose residents were dependent upon trains to provide their food, fuel, and other provisions. The historic snows blocked the trains, and several long months passed while people had to get creative to obtain food, fuel, and entertainment.
Wilson’s award-winning book The Beautiful Snow: The Ingalls Family, the Railroads, and the Hard Winter off 1880-81 is a perfect non-fiction companion to Wilder’s “The Long Winter” novel from the Little House series.
