Pennington County: 3.6% less students were enrolled in 2024-25 school year

There were 2,000 students enrolled in Pennington County schools in the 2024-25 school year, 3.6% less than the previous year, according to reports from the Minnesota Department of Education.

In terms of gender distribution, the student body in Pennington County comprised 51.5% boys, with girls representing the remaining 48.5%.

Data also showed that white students made up 82% of the student body, the largest percentage in Pennington County schools, followed by Hispanic students with 7.3%, 6.4% American Indian students, 3.4% multiracial students, 0.8% Asian students and 0.2% Black students.

Challenger Elementary had the highest enrollment among Pennington County's six schools in the 2024-25 school year, welcoming 727 students.

With more than 870,000 students enrolled, Minnesota's public school system is the 10th-largest in the United States. As of 2025 the student-to-teacher ratio in the state’s public schools is 15 to 1, on par with the national average.
