Following two nights of protests earlier this month that turned violent and yielded dozens of arrests, Polk County instituted a curfew.
The curfew, which required residents to stay at their homes from 9 p.m., May 31 to 5 a.m., June 1, came after the George Floyd protests in downtown Des Moines.
Floyd was a Minnesota man who died in police custody on May 25. An officer allegedly pressed his knee against Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes.
KIMT reported that 47 arrests were made in the early hours of May 31.
Gov. Kim Reynolds expressed her support for the curfew. She and Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie made the request for it in response to nighttime vandalism.
The Polk County Board of Supervisors rescinded the curfew by way of a unanimous vote on June 4.
