A New York City financial news and commentary website discovered that 6.8% of the population of Minnesota has served in the military.

The Center Square reported that 24/7 Wall St. placed Minnesota as the 12th lowest among the 50 states. Recent Census data determined that 294,377 veterans call the Gopher State home.

Over 6% of veterans live below the poverty line while 297 are classified as homeless.

The analysis found 20% of the nation’s 18 million veterans were active after the 9/11 terrorist attacks while close to 33% served during the Vietnam era. 24/7 Wall St. discovered that 1.2 million of the veterans live in poverty and 37,000 are on the street, The Center Square reported.

The analysis also determined that states with the country’s largest veteran populations like Alaska and Virginia have major military installations and large shares of active-duty troops, the publication reported.
